Half empty

My mother is taking an unscheduled road trip to Des Moines, Iowa, where my brother is located. He is in a coma. Again. My brother's best friend, the bass player from SLIPKNOT, thinks he may have become addicted to the pain medicine that the doctors prescribed him after the last time he was in a diabetic coma [last March]. He almost died that time. Found naked and lying on his back in a pool of water from a running faucet for two days, a few feet away from his insulin, before they knocked his door down. That coma ruined the nerves in his already diabetic damaged legs. It's bad enough he needs to inject insulin into himself twice daily, but the doctors prescribed pain medicine to a man who is alone, depressed, clinically blind, poor, and historically deals with difficult bouts of chemical addiction. The same pain management medicine that Rush Limbaugh was addicted to: OxyContin. At least, that's the current theory. Chemistry is a beast.

Speaking of addiction; my pal/writer Tim Hall published his first novel, HALF EMPTY, with Undie Press and it debuted this past weekend at the Small Press Book Fair in midtown Manhattan. To borrow from the back cover blurb, the book contains "a moving tale of love and loss that explores the horror of sobriety, the search for authenticity, and the struggle of the outsider to fit in." I was privy to an advance galley of this harrowing novel and I highly recommend it. Maybe not a holiday stocking stuffer, but hey, you can always read it in-between Xmas and Valentine's Day.
