Hey, I'm guilty of going to a reading/signing and ordering the book for a good discount off Amazon, too. However, these events cost the bookstore AND the author/s money, marketing, and time, and I don't think it's a crime to ask people to buy the book or charge something. Bookstores that are currently surviving the digital tsunami can offer live and direct access to a parlay and performance that is sorely missing from discounted purchases online. Do I want to meet/see/hear every writer I read? No. But there are some I would gladly stand on line for just to shake their hand and say "Thank you." And, if it costs me the price of their book, it's win-win.
