Contra Costa Times reviews THE QUITTER

"THE QUITTER," written by Harvey Pekar and illustrated by Dean Haspiel (Vertigo, $19.99): Find your voice. That's the best advice to give wannabe columnists and reviewers. Pekar, author of "American Splendor," should be teaching a master's course about capturing your true identity in print. In "Quitter," he doesn't go easy on himself, depicting how he turned into a shiftless bully who jumped from job to job, brawl to brawl, just to evade failure. Illustrator Haspiel's black-and-white panels are shadowy and crisp, brushed with light nostalgia. This is a compelling and unsettling glimpse into Pekar's mind. B+
