Over a year ago, I was looking for a good modern noir when rantcomics recommended Andrew Vachss' THE GETAWAY MAN. I finally got the chance to sit down and read it this past weekend. Written like a young-adult novel in the spirit of Jim Thompson's POP. 1280, I was captivated by the deceptively simple tone and no bones about it character analysis. The story rolled out like a need-to-know diary where push-come-to-shove action brokered the resolve crushing desire couldn't muster. I barely saw the final twist coming as it walloped me with the very last line like a good noir should. A brisk read for a cluttered mind in need of a criminally charged break.
