Michael Arthur

My good friend, Michael Arthur, is a unique Brooklyn artist in that he is notorious for doing what he dubs "location art." What that entails is that he sits in on ballet rehearsals, Broadway show rehearsals, sound checks and recording sessions and chronicles them in ink. He uses no rough drafts and no pencils. Each drawing is a live reaction to the moment. He is the archival artist at Joe's Pub where they host a permanent show of his drawings. Michael has toured with American Ballet Theater, The Martha Graham Dance Company, as well as many others. He also is a member of the indie-band, Balthrop Alabama, where he draws live and it's projected on a screen while they play.

The legendary Al Hirschfeld regarded Michael as "one of the most talented young artists" he ever met. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Michael is our generation's Al Hirschfeld.
