The Philadelphia Inquirer reviews THE ALCOHOLIC

The Alcoholic
By Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel. 136 pages. Vertigo. $19.99.

Novelist Ames' first and stunningly successful foray into graphic narrative territory is the "emotionally autobiographical" and compelling story of "Jonathan A.," a semifictional, hard-drinking and -drugging novelist whose addictions lead him into fixes, sometimes life-threatening, sometimes amusing, such as when he wakes up in the back seat of a car in Asbury Park with an amorous elderly companion. Tender, funny and heartbreaking.
