The Doors App featuring new comic by Holzman & Haspiel

I had the great fortune to be hired by recording industry innovator Jac Holzman, the man who started Elektra Records, to collaborate with his son/musician Adam Holzman, to bring to life in comix form the now infamous "Miami Incident" and tell The Doors official, sanctioned tale of whether or not Jim Morrison truly exposed himself on stage via the new Doors App which debuts today.

Here is an excerpt from the official press release:

"Among the other centerpieces of The Story section is a graphic novelization of the notorious Miami Incident, where Morrison was falsely accused of exposing himself during a 1969 concert. The infamous episode comes to life here through drawings by award-winning comic book artist Dean Haspiel, words by Adam Holzman (son of Jac), and rare audio of Morrison recorded during the show. This section also includes the once-confidential FBI report, the arrest report, a portion of Jim's tongue-in-cheek testimony, Morrison's mug shot, and his posthumous pardon issued in 2010."

http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-20130507-906159.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

The New York Times interviews Jac Holzman: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/07/business/media/miss-the-music-of-the-doors-theres-an-ipad-app-for-that.html?_r=0

Hannah Means-Shannon reports The Doors App at The Beat: http://comicsbeat.com/the-doors-app-tells-morrisons-tale-through-haspiels-comics/

Watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aqWUFI9e8oU

On the heels of LOAD COMIX 2013, I'll be returning to SUNY Purchase for Zine Feast on Sunday, May 5th to talk with cartoonist/former The Load comics editor, Pat Giles [who's new show, CARTOON LAGOON just debuted at C2E2; see trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9GL646XfWo ], about making comix for The Load in the late 1980s/early 90s, the now long defunct campus newspaper where my character, TOMMY ROCKET first appeared. The talk will be from 4pm - 5:30pm and be moderated by Zine Feast organizer, Olivia Fox, who's father created The Load. I'll also be selling comix and sharing a table with studio mates/cartoonists, Seth Kushner and Jess Ruliffson!

http://zinefeast.com/events

You can see/read LOAD Comix 2013 article here: http://welcometotripcity.com/2013/04/load-comix-2013/

7 into 6

It's become too exhausting and less rewarding pimping other people's work. Especially when the reciprocation is rare, if not nil. I've finally started to recognize the wisdom of people close to me advising that I spend less time helping other people and focus more on helping myself. I will always and forever champion community and I can't help my innately altruistic behavior, but I'm near 46-years old with no health insurance, working 7-days a week, eating way too many peanut butter sandwiches and a month away from living on the street because the industry I chose to make hay in pushes me to work three times harder for payment that hasn't increased in six years while prices inflate and bills loom [I'm currently typing this on a beautiful sunny Saturday while inside the tomb of my cement studio with the view of brick warehouse under an elevated train station through a chain linked window while people experience something called "brunch" a couple of blocks away from me]. Not to sound bleak [nobody put a gun to my head and forced me to make comix], but I can't continue to lead if I don't take care of myself. I would be doing a disservice to the proverbial plates I seem to spin on a daily basis. When I'm in healthier mental and physical shape, I will reconsider breaking new ground but, for the meantime, I need to retreat and heal and pray I can turn seven working days into six.

Press releases Breakers on April 25th.

So What? Press, the new publishing imprint headed by Dave Kelly & Lara Antal, is set to release Breakers, an anthology of comics featuring Ellen Forney, Dean Haspiel, Megan Kelso, and twenty-two other outstanding cartoonists.

The book will have its East Coast premiere at Desert Island, 540 Metropolitan Ave., Brooklyn, NY on Thursday, April 25th at 7:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public. Beer and cookies (in the shape of sharks) will be provided. The book will be offered at a discounted price of $10.00 at this event.

It will premiere on the West Coast the following weekend at Stumptown Comics Festival, April 27-28, in Portland, OR.

This anthology collects work created during Atlantic Center for the Arts Residency #147, the second only residency to be offered by the institution in comics and cartooning, which took place in October, 2012.

The publishers hope you will join them for these events. The book will be available in stores and online the following week. So What? Press handles all distribution worldwide. For more information, visit www.sowhatpress.com. All inquiries can be directed to sowhatpress@gmail.com.
From the back cover:
In October 2012, twenty-six comics creators descended upon Central Florida for a three-week residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. These lost souls were set adrift in an incubator of creativity amidst killer sharks, a local nude beach, and other primordial nature. Under the tutelage of Ellen Forney, Dean Haspiel, and Megan Kelso, a body of work was generated that interwove many similar themes based on their new found tropical isolation. What you hold in your hands is a summation of that experience, a document of a wondrous blur of creative freedom, and perhaps an artifact of a comics paradise lost.

From the Archie Comics/Red Circle press release:
http://redcirclecomics.com/2013/04/22/red-circle-comics-announces-haspiel-and-waid-to-team-on-new-series/

Eisner Award winning writer Mark Waid and Emmy winning writer/artist Dean Haspiel are teaming up to launch a brand new series – The Fox. Taking place in the Red Circle universe, this exciting creative team will deliver an innovative, action-packed superhero story starring the fabled pulp hero.

This thrilling new addition is a shake up to the Red Circle lineup. The previously solicited New Crusaders: Dark Tomorrow will receive a new release date in early 2014. The critically acclaimed New Crusaders series received high praise and year-end “best of” acknowledgements, dubbed “one of the most enjoyable and surprising books on the stands” and response to The Fox will no doubt echo that sentiment.

The first volume, New Crusaders: Rise of the Heroes, is now available for order in Previews. In addition, this summer’s forthcoming New Crusaders: Legacy TPB features both new and iconic stories including Alex Toth‘s run on The Fox, and contributions from comic book legends Steve Ditko, Carmine Infantino, and more.

Red Circle Comics is home to Archie Comics’ super hero properties, most notably The Shield, The Comet, The New Crusaders, and The Mighty Crusaders. Consisting of super heroes who emerged during the Golden Age of comics and remain relevant today, the Red Circle stable of characters have a storied history that continues to grow denser with the highly publicized New Crusaders launch.

http://graphicpolicy.com/2013/04/22/haspiel-and-waid-to-team-on-new-red-circle-comics-series/
http://comicsbeat.com/waid-and-haspiel-team-on-the-fox-for-archie/
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=45052
http://www.denofgeek.us/books-comics/the-fox/102239/mark-waid-and-dean-haspiel-team-up-for-the-fox

Sex and Violence? “Blame it on New York!”

(Dean Haspiel and Danny Fingeroth, photographed by Hannah Means-Shannon)

Hannah Means-Shannon reports on the comix performance/panel I did, "Blame it on New York," with several other cartoonists, curated and moderated by Danny Fingeroth at Soho Gallery for Digital Art.

Excerpts:
"Dean Haspiel, also a graduate of the High School of Music and Art, but part of the first graduating class after it had been renamed LaGuardia High School of Music, Art & the Performing Arts, performed his autobiographical comic from STREET CODE, which, he informed the audience, dealt with events that happened only a “few blocks” from the Soho Gallery in the late 80’s. Living across from a hair salon curiously named “Boy Loves Girl Hair”, he witnessed a couple having oral sex on a bench in the wee hours of the morning. Since no one would have believed his tale of the nonchalant act, he recorded it on camera, and later became acquainted with the “female exhibitionist” in the video who, in fact, lived above the salon. Her public performances grew increasingly daring and lured Haspiel into competition, giving him pause to reflect on his father’s sage words, “There are things you never ever consider doing before midnight”. Haspiel’s active, bold art style conveyed the vivacious and the bizarre in his real-life experiences of the city, and also the potential to lose connections in the vastness of its human population, concluding that, after a time, he lost touch with his exhibitionist friend and “never saw her again."

"Haspiel noted that it’s all part of the inundation of narrative detail the city contains, constantly draining its inhabitants of money, leaving them “broker, but richer with stories”. In the 80’s, Haspiel was constantly “confronted with death and murder” to the extent that walking out the door became frightening, including being hit with debris from a car accident at close quarters..."

http://comicsbeat.com/on-the-scene-sex-and-violence-blame-it-on-new-york/

The Times Square I miss

I remember walking down ye olde 42nd Street when I was bold and young and the theaters were packed with porn, horror and kung fu movies and hookers were like parking sign posts and mailboxes. One time, a crazy looking black man confronts me and we walk in tandem. At first he tries to sell me drugs, I say No. Then, knives. I say No. Guns? No. (Who am I, Travis Bickle?) Then he puts his hand on my chest and tries to sell me...a missile launcher. I stopped dead in my tracks and stared at him as he waited for my answer. I couldn't even form the letters N and O because I was gobsmacked. A missile launcher? Really? I think I ran away.

A Funny Side of New York

Bruce Bennett, writer for the Wall Street Journal, reported on "Blame it on New York," a comix event curated and moderated by Danny Fingeroth at Soho Gallery of Digital Art.

Excerpt:
"Dean Haspiel's self-narrated black-and-white depiction of an episode of mutual voyeurism in Little Italy employed accompanying graphic language well outside the boundaries of a family newspaper.

"People are having sex all the time in New York," Mr. Haspiel later said. "I remember once I saw a couple having sex through my window. My friend said 'Stop looking' and I said, 'Why? I pay rent, it's my window!'"

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323309604578431610651670012.html

Stanley Crouch

While sitting in my local barber shop chair, getting a much needed haircut from Ilana, I sat next to writer, Stanley Crouch, who was getting a shave and, after a round-robin of pre-coffee morning gibberish, we concocted a plan to make comix together that would turn The New Yorker on its ear.
"Don’t Be a Hater: On Lit Mags and Their Covers"

Grub Street Daily gives me some love for the Barrelhouse cover I did:

"Look at that noir-ish city landscape in the back, that beautiful blue in contrast to the elegant simplicity of the black lines in the cartoon. It’s elegant simplicity coupled with drawings of naked, um, camels? Donkeys? And what’s this guy about to do—spring up and go somewhere? Collapse in a heap next to that sleeping animal on the couch? What’s that small mushroom cloud above his head? Come on. Don’t tell me you’re not curious."

http://grubdaily.org/dont-be-a-hater-on-lit-mags-and-their-covers/

"The Last Romantic Antihero is a visually impressive work of literature.
