War of the Anthologies

Got my comp copy of BIZARRO WORLD [as did, I'm sure, the contributors]. Reports of the release are leaking out all over the internet. I think it hits shelves in a week or two. This is a highly anticipated book for the comix industry. A clash of the mainstream and alternative titans, only "there is no mainstream," as far as I'm concerned. I've read half the book and it's pretty good. A great sequel. Chris Duffy and Scott Morse provide a nifty introductory story that launches the experience quite well. I dug the first volume but the bookends were a bit much. I can't see why this concept couldn't be a monthly anthology collected annually.

Sneak preview of BIZARRO WORLD:

Of course, the alternative response to BIZARRO WORLD is PROJECT: SUPERIOR coming very soon from AdHouse Books: http://www.adhousebooks.com/

I have my differences with DC, but I am looking forward to both those books. With the money situation I may have to wait until the softcover Bizarro comes out, but what's a year or two in the long run?

Yep. Yer gonna wait at least a year or so for the BIZARRO WORLD softcover. Dollars to donuts you drop trou and buy a copy before then or you get to borrow and read it. Either way, I'm curious what you think of both anthologies.

No slight towards DC. I think BIZARRO rocks.

so let me ask you this, and if you don't want to answer because this kind of question makes you roll your eyes, i totally understand. (I have mixed reactions when people ask me to "tell them about art.") but let's say i feel a little funny about superheroes, i've read two graphic novels and loved them (why i hate saturn and a cotton candy autopsy), i don't watch any sci fi at all (i rule out all movies with vampires, space dinosaurs and wizards.) but i like the idea of comics. (i used to work with mark newgarden, Drew Freidnman, Stephen Cerio, kaz, and a few othrs from that little area). What are two things I might look at to get started? I love a good story, and of course i love great pictures because I am not dead inside. please don't hate me for asking but i like your sensibility and you seem super smart (and handsome!) so i feel like your advice, i'd take.

No harm in asking. Let me think on this one. There are so many good graphic novels and trade paperback collections in every genre, I don't know where to start.

Gimme a genre or two you really dig and I'll see what I can advise.

I don't even know what genres of that stuff are. Maybe just tell e a couple that you personally loved and thought "wow". See, the steep learning curve is what prevents a lot of people from gettinmg into this stuff, which is a shame. it's all got the appearance of being very clubby. Which, once you have tour path figured out, is great. But if there were better lit entry signs, I wonder if it wouldn't benefit all parties involved. (did that make sense?)

Comix cover most genres and age groups. The medium is quite available to all.

Off the top of my head, I think you would dig:

Adrian Tomine's SLEEPWALK, and SUMMER BLONDE
Bob Fingerman's BEG THE QUESTION
Daniel Clowes' GHOST WORLD, and CARICATURE
Chris Ware's JIMMY CORRIGAN
Jason Little's SHUTTERBUG FOLLIES
Jessica Abel's MIRROR, WINDOW
Craig Thompson's BLANKETS
Josh Neufeld's A FEW PERFECT HOURS
Dean Haspiel's OPPOSABLE THUMBS, and AIM TO DAZZLE [that's Me!]
Jaime Hernandez' LOCAS IN LOVE, and DICKS & DEEDEES
Jason Lutes' JAR OF FOOLS, and BERLIN
Chester Brown's I NEVER LIKED YOU, and ED, THE HAPPY CLOWN
Seth's IT'S A GOOD LIFE IF YOU DON'T WEAKEN
Brian Biggs' DEAR, JULIA
Frank Miller's SIN CITY [various]
Vaughan & Guerra's Y - THE LAST MAN [Vertigo Comics]
Azzarello & Risso's 100 BULLETS [Vertigo Comics]
Ennis & Dillon's PREACHER [Vertigo Comics]
Gaimen's SANDMAN [Vertigo Comics]
Seagle & Kristiansen's IT'S A BIRD [Vertigo Comics]
Robert Kirkman's THE WALKING DEAD
Mike Mignola's HELLBOY [various]
The Luna Bros. ULTRA
Jim Rugg's STREET ANGEL
Wood & Cloonan's DEMO

etc., etc.

Maybe kickstart your indie/alt tease with McSWEENY'S QUARTERLY CONCERN #13 [the comix issue], and pick and choose who you like from that?

All of which should be available here:

Now I know when you say alternative, you mean companion right?

I mean really, should the books be in competition?

I don;t know how I'll do it financially at this time unless some extra cash trikles in, but I want both books.

I doubt there's gonna be such a big signing for the second book like the first one so that I can a really personalized version (unless I dragged it to MOCCA and/or Comic-Con, but I'm still gonna want both books sooner than later.

BIZARRO WORLD and PROJECT: SUPERIOR will make great companion pieces but the inevitable comparisons will occur and I'm curious for the reviews. We live in a society of pecking orders and lists.

Both books are slated to have signings at Jim Hanley's Universe.

You're joking, right? I drew a 4-issue THING mini-series written by Evan Dorkin called NIGHT FALLS ON YANCY STREET.

MTIO = ALL THING, all the time, baby!

As in just THING stories, none of that celebraty guest star of the week kind of stuff?

A really quality "Marvel Two In One" would be great for them to do. Go be typin' up some scripts, brother!
