Crappy Building Crisis
Gang--

Thanks for all the props re: my article in Monday's METRO. That was very sweet of y'all to weigh in. I was especially pleased with the piece. Now, if only I'd crack a smile in my pix.

I got a call last Friday @6PM from Pete the art director at THE WASHINGTON CITY PAPER to illustrate an article over the weekend quick like. Pete told me about the story and we brainstormed. I came up with something different than he first imagined but he dug the concept. I know how incredibly difficult it is to convey an entire idea in one panel and/or represent a story in a single image, so, I was pleased with my solution.

I drew this while listening to film director Philip Kaufman do commentary on his great version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.

Haw! I like your interpretation of the illo. It has nothing to do with the story I illustrated. I suppose it does a dandy job standing alone sans text, even though the article conveys a very different message.

SAY -- what's your obsession with my dress code?

If there's an online version of the piece, I'll post it.

I heard a lot of cartoonists listen to director's commentaries while cartooning. Which is cool, certainly there's a lot to learn from and lord knows cartooning can get lonely.

Nothing wrong with Kaufman's Body Snatchers. Isn't that the one with the credit sequence all in silence?

Cool pic, too.

I just started taking advantage of the "extras" on my DVD collection. Between music, movies, and Court TV, I've got my background noise covered.

Yes. I think the end credit sequence is silent so that the final image of the film resonates.

I think I saw a picture of you smiling once.

I dare you to smile in your next publicity pic.

PS the art looks awesome!

As you know that's my favorite kind of gag. Well done.

I have one for you but it can wait a while.

Thanks. You've akways pimped the virtues of the one panel gag. You said you had an idea you wanted to submit to THE NEW YORKER.

Hit me.

Oh, I suppose I do, but that's not what I was talking about. I have another one I wrote on Christmas Eve, but there's time for it yet. It's for Christmas.

Love it.
Richly detailed, which is so rare for a "punchline" panel.
You like how I sound like I know what I'm talking about?

Side note, how much *WRITING* do you do?

Thanks. I hope I reach the day where I jam this type of work out in an hour. The pay is no better than an hour's worth of my time.

I'm not very confident in my writing skills but I write all the time. I've been writing scripts for my upcoming AS BIG AS EARTH comic while drawing THE QUITTER. I need to find time in-between Pekar pages to draw A-OKAY COOL and BILLY DOGMA stories so I can have 3-issues in the can before the comic launch come Fall. Keep them fingers crossed.

First of all, I hope you realize how cool you are.

I work out of my home too, but to bad this old country house is not isolated. These days I have the public domaine OTR's for my background.

"Old Time Radio"
It's so un-hip, that it's hip!

You strike me as a "Box 13" kinda guy.
"The Shadow", "Suspense", "Lux Radio Theater", "Broadway Is My Beat" and "Dargnet" as well come to think of it.

From my amateur eye, a find waste of a weekend.

Screw that "crank out" kind of talk. Yes I know you don't need to be Michelangelo every day of the week, on every project. But yes I do know you put a lot more than an hour into even a snarky comment. And even those aren't a waste!

nor is your wisdom of tues night. gracias, amigo.

Thanks. I'm trying to master the $110 drawing in under an hour. Haven't managed to break even yet. Still, I don't have to put on snow boots to go to work, so that's a plus. I think.

Yer welcome for the pep.

but your snow boots offer so much ankle support!

And I don't make $110 an hour either.
